In the words of the iconic Abba from their 1977 hit, “Thank You For The Music”:
Without a song or a dance what are we?
So I say thank you for the music
For giving it to me
I don’t know about you, but personally, I spend a good part of my days listening to music. In the morning on my way to work, at work when I need to drown out the office noise, on my way home when I start to unwind from a busy day… you get the picture.
There’s a reason why they say music is a universal language. I love that you can convey so much emotion through a simple melody, or say things more poetically through lyrics. Isn’t it incredible how we have literally too many songs to choose from? That our entire lifetimes isn’t enough to listen to every song in the world, even if we devote our lives to listening to as many songs as we can in 24 hours?
One of my favourite things about music though, is the way a good song can change your day/mood/perspective so quickly. You know what I mean. We have songs we like to listen to while we work out – the Eye of the Tiger kinda jams that hype us up to get active. There are songs we love to subject ourselves to when we’re sad because it makes us feel a teensy bit better, even if we end up wallowing. A good playlist can even contain power jams (like this one we made for International Women’s Day: http://kimberleycrossman.com/the-ultimate-power-anthems/).
My favourite kind of playlist, though, is the kind that you can just ‘set and forget’. For days where you kinda just need to use all your brain power to getting things done, or when you don’t have time to skip songs or find playlists because you’ve got a deadline to make. This playlist is for those days where all you need to do is put your headphones in, tune out the world around you, and power through those tasks.
